This is the first book in the George Grove series. It starts with three twelve year old boys in South London, a secret and an abandoned dragon's egg. The ordinary reality of the Inner City provides a cover for the boys, their friends and acquaintances as they are increasingly embroiled in a magical battle between ICE (Initiates in the Control of the Esoteric) and the Harbingers of DoOM (Destruction of Ordinary Magic). It all goes spectacularly and hilariously wrong when their parents, teachers and the police start to get involved and the dragon's not too happy either.
LJ Lawry takes the edges off reality and shifts them slightly, coaxing the reader to join the start of a fantastical, magical journey through London and beyond, into a realm of wild imagination and the birthplace of ideas.

Being a dragon fancier and fantasy reader, this sounded like a fun, light story.I was wrong. So very, very wrong.
The story starts on a bad note with three South London boys who are too stupid to recognize a dragon when they see one. It goes downhill from there, as they repeatedly prove themselves several degrees too dumb to actually have a magical adventure. Meanwhile, the story totters off down the street, possibly as bored with the threesome as I was, peering into the lives of teachers and students and other residents of South London in prolonged tangents that add little to nothing of value to the plot. Along the way, what I had thought would be a light modern fantasy about dragons and magic degenerates into a general condemnation of modern education systems that value statistics over imagination. (It also suffers from the delusion that a nice plate of elfin cookies and a heart-to-heart chat will heal even the most violent and jaded of hearts.) The lack of a competent editor and/or proofreader, not to mention thick London street slang, only made reading it that much more unbearable.
Oh, yes - to cap it all, this book ends on a cliffhanger, on the mistaken assumption that I hadn't nearly clawed my eyes out in the effort to finish reading it and would want to subject myself to a second volume of torture.
I'm sure, somewhere, there is an audience that will absolutely love this wandering, politically correct, sickly-sweet story. I'm just as sure that that audience is not me.

George Grove and the Dragon The George Grove Series Book 1 edition by LJ Lawry Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
A new voice in the Young Adult fiction market makes her presence felt in this wondrous story. It effectively mixes the social realism of year seven South London school kids with the fantasy world of dragons, witchcraft and magic. Where the Harry Potter environment that Rowling creates is fantastical from its onset, Lawry creates an easily recognisable bunch of kids and adult characters, superficially with all the comic nuances of contemporary life south of the river. The discovery of the egg and the nurturing of the dragon lead the boys into a realm surrounding the George Grove Comprehensive that resonates with the struggles of white versus black magic. Yet they retain their feet on the ground as they search for a siren to calm the dragon, little realising they have the very object of their needs at hand in the form of a concupiscent traffic stopper who goes to school with them. Their adventures in and around their school and in their homes are portrayed with a disarming candour, an erudite knowledge of the street and the neighbourhood, and an unflinching eye for the humour of drunken students, incompetent coppers and scheming teachers. What is that noise in the background? It's the crumbling of the literary edifice of Hogwarts. George Grove Comprehensive rises to supplant it in the hearts and minds of the second decade of the twenty-first century. A delight to read, with laugh out loud humour and the boisterous high jinks of city kids.
